This is a very common syndrome and can occur in all ages. We are not sure exactly what causes it but it does seem to be related to diet and stress.
The main symptoms are abdominal pain, bloating and a change in bowel habit. To an extent all of us will have it at some time, but for some people it can be very severe and significantly affects their life.
There are a few conditions that mimic these symptoms so they need to be ruled out first; coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer (if over 50).
Sometimes the reassurance that there is nothing more serious going on is all people need, but if the symptoms are very severe then a special diet (called a FODMAP diet) helps about 60% of people.
